Why professional and technical writing?

Our programs in PTW prepare students for the vast array of communications tasks required on the job. Studying professional and technical writing opens up a field of dynamic, diverse careers across tech and IT, government, community development, the arts, education, and more. And no matter what career you're in, communication and writing skills are consistently ranked as highest and most important by employers. (Source: National Association of Colleges and Employers)

The PTW grad programs at GMU are designed to strengthen and build foundational skills in writing and communication and connect students to rich career opportunities through professional development activities in and out of class.

How do I get started?

We offer three options for getting started on your next steps in professional and technical writing:

  1. Our MA in English, concentration in professional and technical writing
  2. Our Graduate Certificate in professional and technical writing
  3. Non-degree coursework this fall

Each option offers you the flexibility to pursue graduate school at your own pace, from starting out directly, full-time, in the full MA, to beginning with just one course to see how graduate school can fit into your schedule and professional goals. All of our core courses are hybrid, meeting 5-6 times per semester on the GMU Fairfax campus.
