About Our Curriculum

Courses in the theory and practice of professional writing make up the core of our MA and graduate certificate (ENGH 501, 502, 503, 505).

Certificate students can specialize in proposal writing or technical communication through additional coursework.

MA students expand the program basics through additional coursework in theory, research, and professional writing practices, while capping their degree with a final project or thesis that showcases the skills they build in the program.

We offer a variety of options for pursuing a graduate degree or other advanced coursework.

Our Graduate Certificate
(18 credits/6 courses)
  • Trains in core competencies for professional writers, including editing and design
  • Specializes students by building expertise in technical communication or proposal writing and development
  • Can be completed in as little as 9 months, full-time
Our MA in English, Concentration in Professional and Technical Writing
(30 credits/10 courses)
  • Builds upon core competencies through additional coursework in theory, design, and research
  • Offers final project and thesis options to help you build your portfolio of writing samples and research abilities
  • Can be completed in as little as 18 months, full time
New--March 2024: Essentials of Technical Writing for the Public Sector
  • Course offers units in to build your toolkit of essential skills when writing for the public sector
  • Topics include: plain language, fundamentals of grammar and style, AI for the technical writer, accessible document and visual design
  • Course is online and instructor-led, giving you maximum flexibility while still accessing expert instructors and a cohort of other writers in the field

Applications for our Spring cohorts are accepted with an October 15 priority deadline. The Fall cohort priority deadline is March 15, with applications accepted until July 15.
